Reggaeton 101
Written by: Bethany J. Baldwin, www.MADsocietyInc.com
Basic Plot: Get ready to vibe with “DJ MAD” who’s going to electrify a group of vacationers at an unforgettable dance party! With high-energy reggaeton instructions, they'll learn the moves that will unlock their confidence and get them grooving to the irresistible rhythm of the Caribbean. And the best part? They’ll be rocking it in front of an excited crowd (the show audience).
Genre: Improvisation Comedy
Male, Female or Either: all can be either
Length of skit: 3-10 minutes
Who: This is an opportunity for the entire cast and crew to interpret a story that is read to them providing funny improv and energy to the Variety Show without prep work.
What: This is a performance consisting of a story that 1 designated student or adult will read out loud, while the rest of the cast and crew act out the story on stage. There is no prep work. It should be spontaneous. This Group Improv Skit does recommend purchasing cheap sunglasses for the actors to put on. The sunglasses will aid in helping the actors feel more comfortable dancing, but they are not required. You will need to remove the line about handing out sunglasses if you choose not to provide those.
Why: This is an act that will provide more content for your Variety Show without the typical prep work of a play or skit. It’s also wonderful for bonding within the group to do something all together and include the crew.
When: This ‘act’ will be integrated into the Variety Show performance line up to provide uniqueness to the feel of the show.
Where: This ‘act’ will be performed on stage, as a group.
How:
Pick 1 reader/narrator to be the leads for this performance. The Narrator is the only student allowed to read this story before the performance. If you pick a student, make sure they are a confident reader. Narrator, you should read this story slowly, pausing when the acting on stage is good, moving to the next sentence when things settle. Make sure they are loud or use a microphone. The Narrator should have a pen to cross off the lines as they say them so they know where to start if they look up at the acting.
Read this page of instructions to the whole group so they understand what they will be doing.
Print this document and only give it to the reader/narrator. The actors must follow any instructions read during the story. The length of the ‘act’ will depend on how fast the narrator reads and how long they pause if the actors are entertaining enough.
